How we began and where we are going

West Seattle Nursery (WSN) is an owner-operated, independent retail nursery and garden center. The previous owner, Mark Smith, began his nursery selling Christmas trees during college and spent several years managing seasonal nurseries in other parts of the city. Mark began West Seattle Nursery and Garden center in its current incarnation in 1983. During the 1980s, WSN moved to several different locations before finally acquiring its permanent site in 1990 here at 5275 California Ave SW, right in the heart of West Seattle.

In 2019, Mark sold the business to Marcia Bruno, the nursery’s general manager since 2008. She was instrumental in adding the new greenhouse/gift shop, which opened in 2016.

Our Mission

West Seattle Nursery strives to serve the gardening needs of West Seattle residents. Although we are a small footprint, it is our goal to be a destination nursery that draws visitors from near and far with a wide variety of affordable, healthy, regionally grown perennials, annuals, trees, and shrubs. Our gift shop, statuary and garden art selection is eclectic and driven by a desire to represent local and American made merchandise. Our mission is to help customers find products and get the information they need to enjoy the benefits and beauty of gardening.

WSN prides itself on its neighborhood involvement and participates in many community and greater Seattle events. We make contributions of various kinds to public schools and non-profit horticultural organizations and projects. We offer garden-related classes and workshops for the community and host pop-up shops to support other local businesses.
